Why Moving To Another Country May Not Result In Language Learning

1. You Hang Around Too Many English Speakers

If the people around you are speaking English all the time, it’s hard to practice another language. Every moment you’re speaking English is a moment you’re not practicing your target language. I’m not saying remove yourself completely from fellow English speakers because balance is a great thing. However, spending all your time with people that speak your language does not push you out of your comfort zone.

2.  You’re Afraid Of Looking Silly

The embarrassment of mispronouncing words, or saying the wrong words have you paralyzed. You don’t want to look dumb, so you refuse to speak. But the fear of looking unintelligent is keeping you from progressing. More times than not, you are your own worst critic.  

3. You Think It Will Come Through Osmosis 

When you visit or move to another country where they speak a different language, you will inadvertently pick up on words and phrases. However, you have to actively use the language, rather than passively use it.

If you don’t know anyone in your new city, try getting involved in hobbies. Find people with similar interests and join group activities. Group activities can be a low-pressure way to learn the language. 

4. You Don’t Enjoy It 

If you don’t enjoy it, you will never learn. Learning a language, no matter the location you’re in will become more of a burden than a chore. When you enjoy it, you will learn more quickly.
