What To Do About Language Barriers When You’re Abroad?

What do you do if you’re abroad and you can’t speak the language? Language barriers can put a damper on your fun in a new place, but they don’t have to! Below are a few tips to help you if you are confronted with language barriers in a different country or place.

1. Try To Learn A Few Phrases Beforehand 

Learning a few phrases beforehand may help tremendously. How much? Where? I’m lost. Do you speak English? 

Learning a few survival phrases can make being in a country a little bit easier. 

2. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help 

I have faith in humanity. More likely than not, people will be more than willing to help you. When you’re new to a country and can’t speak the language, you may be surprised how loving people can be, even though there is a language barrier.

3. Write It Down If Language Barriers Get In The Way

Write down important addresses and survival phrases. This is especially important if the language uses a different alphabet or characters.

4. Use Translation Apps To Get Over Language Barriers

Before you go overseas, be sure to download an app that will help you speak the language. 

5. If There Are Language Barriers, Remain Calm, Be Patient

You may get flustered and that’s totally normal. But remember to be patient.

6. Learn The Language If You’re There Long Enough

If you are there long enough, remember you’re a guest. Learning the language of your target country can help you integrate better. And even if you’re in your host country for a few days, knowing a few key phrases can go a long way with the locals.
