Hey Travelers! I get a lot of questions about what it’s like to be in a relationship while working in the Foreign Service and how to navigate dating overseas. Today, I want to share my personal story of how I met the man of my dreams during a transformative period in my life. This story is part of a relationship series that I’m launching on Hey Ms. Traveler!
In 2018, I made a conscious decision to embark on what I called a “Man Fast.” You may be asking yourself what is a “Man Fast.” To me, it was a period of time dedicated to self-discovery, personal growth, and putting my romantic life on hold. I was tired of the ups and downs of dating and wanted to focus on preparing myself for the next chapter of my life, which included graduating from grad school and starting my new job in the Foreign Service.
During my Man Fast, I divided my journey into stages, each with a specific focus:
Fast forward to May 2019, six months into my Man Fast. I was in downtown Baltimore waiting for a magic show that my cousins and I were attending. Little did I know that this day would change my life forever.
As I sat by the water, enjoying a beautiful day, my phone suddenly died. I needed to charge it to find the location of the magic show. I walked into a nearby festival for the Preakness, a famous horse race event in Baltimore. There were many vendors, and I approached several of them, asking to charge my phone. Most declined until I met a kind man who not only let me charge my phone but also allowed me to try flying a drone. We chatted, and he gave me his business card, urging me to contact him.
After my phone had enough charge, I headed to the magic show and had a great time with my cousins. However, I couldn’t find the card that the kind man gave me the next day. I thought it wasn’t meant to be. But fate had other plans.
A few days later, I was at a grocery store, 30 minutes away from where I had met the kind man at the festival. As I walked toward the entrance, I noticed an older gentleman pushing a grocery cart out of the way. As the older man pushed the grocery cart out of the way, the cart careened toward a car parked in front of the store. I ran to the front of the store and made a dive to keep the cart from crashing into the car parked in front of the store. As I stopped the grocery cart from crashing into the car, I saw a man walk out of the store. In a twist of fate, it turned out to be the same man from the festival.
He recognized me and asked why I hadn’t contacted him. I explained to the kind man that I had lost his card. He gave me his card again and revealed that he had watched me prevent a grocery cart from hitting his mom’s car. A few days later, I contacted him, and we scheduled our first meet-up, which eventually led to our first date.=
Our first date was magical, with a picnic in the park, delicious food, and great conversation. Over the next two years, we continued to date, and then he proposed. I now wear a beautiful engagement ring as a symbol of our love story.
My journey to meeting the man of my dreams was unexpected and filled with serendipity. I give credit to God for orchestrating this beautiful love story, which coincided with the day my man fast ended. I want to encourage anyone who might be wondering when they’ll meet their special someone to have faith and trust that love will come at the right time.
My journey to finding love was filled with unexpected twists and turns. Remember, love has its own timeline, and your perfect match may be just around the corner.
Until next time, travelers, let’s travel with our dreams together.
