The neighborhood was alive with music, and street vendors offered mouthwatering treats and “cangas” – beach towels, unique to this region. Surprisingly, the stairs were not as crowded as I thought. Because there were fewer people on the day I visited, I could relish the moment and capture stunning photos.

Originally from Chile, Jorge moved to Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s. Around 1990, he started the ambitious task of revitalizing the stairs right in front of his house. He began decorating them with the vibrant colors of the Brazilian flag: green and yellow, and started adorning them with tiles collected from around the world.
Jorge’s dedication to this project took many years, and he took immense pride in it. People from across the globe contributed to his vision by sending him tiles. Take a closer look when you visit – you might spot a tile from your own country. Jorge’s deep love for Brazil and its people earned him the title of a “carioca,” a resident of Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, in 2013, Jorge Selarón tragically ended his life on the very steps we celebrate today. He left behind a legacy that continues to captivate thousands of visitors annually.
