5 Lessons From My First Meet And Greet

I held my first event with my friend Alise, a.k.a BlackGirlTravelSlay on Instagram. The event brought together 20+ amazing women who are interested in travel. For a first event, it went well. The weather was absolutely gorgeous considering it’s been raining cats and dogs lately in the DMV area. Here are my top five lessons from my first meet and greet.

Lessons From My First Meet And Greet: Just Jump

I’ve wanted to host an event for years. But, I always waited for the “perfect time” to do so…And, as a result, it never happened.

Guess what? 

There’s never a perfect time. I’m in grad school… I don’t blog consistently…I haven’t mastered everything under the sun. Yada, yada, yada. The list of excuses can go on and on.

But I’ve learned, you can’t let feelings of inadequacy stop you from making your next move. 

You just gotta jump. Life will meet you half way, but if you never take the first step, nothing will happen. 

Alise and I jumped and had a nice meet and greet.

Collaboration is important

You will go 10 times further, than if you do it alone. I met so many wonderful, intelligent women from different industries that have talents for days. 

So why not work together? 

I got really good advice from our talks about accountability, traveling, and blogging. I definitely want to collab with these ladies in the future. 

Lessons From My First Meet And Greet: Improvise

Sometimes life does not go according to plan. Instead of freezing or melting-down, you have to roll with the unexpected. Thinking on your feet is so important. When you are a host for any gathering, a teacher in front of the classroom or you’re missing the last ingrediant to your recipe, you gotta keep it moving.

Mistakes are important for growth

During some parts of the event, we definitely made mistakes. I am not sure if our guests noticed, but I did. But you know what? That’s okay. 

Why? 

Because mistakes are life lessons. They teach what to do right the next time. since. I am less likely to repeat the same mistake the next time. It’s only a failure, if you don’t grow. 

People are kind and will support you

I believe there are more nice than evil people in the world. This event reinforced this belief. From the lady who held the door for me as I struggled to carry the drinks and decorations inside…to the security guards who helped carry supplies to the rooftop…to the ladies that attended the meet and greet, thank you.

Everyone was incredibly nice which made co-hosting an event that much easier.
